(NA35) [Effects of supplements of 1.8% phytic acid with or without 230 p.p.m. disodium ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) on availability of Zn were studied with groups of 4 male chickens and semi-purified diets containing casein 25% or an amino acid mixture 24% and 16 to 21 p.p.m. Zn. Experiments lasted 12 days. Phytic acid reduced liveweight gain, feed conversion efficiency and Zn content of femur ash with either source of N. Presence of protein was not necessary for phytic acid to depress availability of Zn. Simultaneous addition of EDTA counteracted the effect of phytic acid.]
