A study of the prolonged intake of small amounts of ethylenediaminetetraacetate on the utilization of low dietary levels of calcium and iron by the rat. Can. J Biochem. Physiol. 1962; 40;391-395. (CA56:15920b) [Young rats were maintained for 84 days on a diet that supplied to each 0.15 mg. Fe and 4.26 mg. Ca/day. The Ca:P ratio of the diet was 1.4. For some of the animals the dihydrate of disodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate (I) was added at 0.01%, which supplied 1 mg./rat/day. The molar ratio of I:Ca:Fe was 1:37.9:1. I did not affect the growth of the rats, the excretion of Ca, or its concn. in femur or blood serum. Since the fecal excretion was not affected, presumably the absorption was not impaired. The growth of the femur was not affected. I was assocd. with higher levels of Fe in the serum, but not to a statistically significant extent. There was no effect upon the content of Fe in the liver or of hemoglobin in the blood.]
