Darwish NM, Kratzer FH. Metabolism of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) by chickens. J Nutr. 1965; 86:187-192. (NA36) [Laying hens 18 or 9 months of age were given a diet low in Zn for 3 to 6 days and were then given by mouth solutions of 65ZnCl2 and ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid-14C mixed in gelatin capsules. A colostomy and harness permitted separate collections of urine and faeces. Recoveries of 65Zn and 14C, respectively, were in respired air none and 4.2%, in urine 0.19 and 8.6% in faeces 90.3 and 51.5%, in digesta 0.9 and 1.4%. It appeared that the Zn was absorbed and eliminated much more slowly than the 14C from EDTA, and it was not possible to ay whether the EDTA-Zn complex took part in absorption.]
