Rosenman RH, Smith MK. The effect of certain chelating substances, salts of ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid (EDTA), upon cholesterol metabolism in the rat. J Clin. Invest. 1956; 35:11-19. (CA50:6676b) The effects of various salt of EDTA upon cholesterol metabolism were studied in rats. Oral administration of these substances markedly increased dietary-induced hypercholesterolemia by augmenting the intestinal absorption of cholesterol. The chelating agents did not alter the hepatic synthesis of cholesterol in rats, or interfere with the usual egress of cholesterol from the plasma, or block the deposition of cholesterol in the rats liver. There was no proof that the effect of the chelating agent upon the plasma cholesterol is mediated by interference with the transfer of cholesterol from plasma into the liver.
