(CA) [Both gastrointestinal absorption and urinary excretion of Cd in rats were increased by a single oral administration of CdCl2 (85 mg Cd/kg) in combination with EDTA (2.54 g EDTA-2Na/kg) or citric acid (2.91 g/kg). Repeated oral administrations of CdCl2 plus EDTA, citric acid or L-ascorbic acid for 37 days had little effect on the distribution of Cd in the liver, kidneys and intestine compared with the single administration. In animals treated with CdCl2 for 30 days, EDTA (30 mg, daily, for 30 days) increased the urinary excretion and renal accumulation of Cd. 2,3-Dimercapto-1-propanol (1.5 mg, i.p.), citric acid 57 mg, orally) and L-ascorbic acid (56 mg, orally) had no such effect.]
