Timar M, Adamis Z, Batskor H.. Lead mobilization in, and the a-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) content of the urine of lead-exposed subjects. Egesesegiudomany. 1966; 10(4):375-380. (CA66) [The urinary excretion of a-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was studied in 88 persons exposed to Pb and in 20 controls before and after treatment with 3 g. of EDTA. The quantities of ALA, Pb, and coproporphyrin were detd. in the urine for 5 days. On the 4th or 5th day of observation, 3 X 1 mg. EDTA was given orally. The ALA content of the normal subjects was 0.16 mg./100 ml. and in the persons exposed to Pb it was significantly higher, 0.85-4.2 mg. The urinary Pb excretion increased significantly in those persons after EDTA treatment (from 80-393 g/l. to 200-3299). The detn. of ALA secretion is a good diagnostic tool, together with coproporphyrin and Pb detns.; 0.46-1.0 mg. ALA/100 ml. represents preintoxication, and 2.2 mg. or higher values indicate intoxication of the exposed person.
