CaEDTA and Iron OverloadTwo references concerning the effect of EDTA on iron absorption: Davis PS, Deller DJ. Effect of orally administered chelating agents EDTA, DTPA and fructose on radioiron absorption in man. Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry 75 (1999):159-165. Cook JD, Monsen, ER. Food iron absorption in man: the effect of EDTA on absorption of dietary non-heme iron. Am J Clin Nutr 29. June 1976: 614-620. I have a patient with hemochromatosis who is currently taking oral chelation (Essential Daily Defense) as part of an overall program. I'll let you know how he does. Dear Doctors: We will come back and visit this subject again and thanks for looking up some references; however, if you type in oral EDTA and IRON, the abstracts on my website may help shed more light on this amazing development. It appears that EDTA can both help deliver iron to iron-depleted children according to the WHO and also clearly helps to lower iron stores when they are elevated. In any event, since iron and copper will both bind with EDTA, there will be less free radical mediated damage in those consuming EDTA orally on a life long basis. It helps to also lower iron intake in your patient and, although the literature is confusing at first, I also do use high doses of Beyond C (4 Gm=1 tsp, bid) and I recommend my new combination of soluble and insoluble fiber (Beyond Fiber) for the Rice Bran Extract and the Inulin from Jerusalem Artichoke, 1 heaping tsp bid minimum up to 1 tablespoon bid. Sincerely, |
